Eliciting student feedback on teaching has been a practice for many years at the University of Pretoria (UP). The purpose of the evaluation of teaching is to assist lecturers to improve their teaching, learning and assessment practices as well as the general quality of the modules they teach. Student feedback on the general quality of teaching and learning is regarded as one of the ways in which these practices can be improved. It is also required by Human Resource policies related to performance management and promotion with regard to lecturer performance. The National Quality Assurance Framework (NQAF) also emphasizes the use of student feedback to improve teaching and learning. Although the evaluations are done in some Faculties on a regular basis, the general perception is that the data collected is not optimally analysed and interpreted through the current system and therefore not used effectively.

In 2019 the Student Feedback Instrument was revised and now consists of 13 questions as well as two additional open-ended questions. Lecturers have the opportunity to choose eight additional questions from a question bank. The new system is geared toward the electronic administration of teaching and course evaluations. The new principle is that end-of-course assessments must be obtained for every lecturer in at least one module a year. The need for more frequent, short feedback opportunities for students throughout the duration of a module to enable continuous improvements is still required. This is also in accordance with UP’s policy on teaching and learning. In order to carry out teaching and course evaluations, UP requires a web-enabled, electronic evaluation solution that can be integrated seamlessly with Blackboard (preferably Bb Ultra), including the Oracle PeopleSoft Campus Solutions database to provide a robust enterprise solution. The solution must have standardised and automated administration processes, allow users to manage key tasks and tailor inputs to their needs, including advanced questioning functionalities, dynamic reporting at multiple user levels and web-enabled dashboards for end-users.
