Objectives

The primary objective of this tender is to improve patient safety and accessibility at Thafamasi Clinic by procuring and installing secure, code-compliant handrails along designated ramps and veranda areas. The project supports the Department of Health’s mandate to maintain barrier-free, hazard-minimised healthcare environments for vulnerable patients and visitors.

Scope of Work

• Procure all necessary handrail materials, brackets, fasteners, and finishing components.
• Attend the compulsory site meeting to assess existing ramp and veranda structures, confirm measurements, and identify mounting substrates.
• Supply and professionally install handrails across specified patient ramp routes and veranda edges.
• Ensure all installations are structurally sound, aesthetically consistent, and fully operational upon completion.
• Remove all packaging, debris, and installation waste from the site before handover.

Technical Requirements

• Materials must be corrosion-resistant, UV-stable, and suitable for outdoor or semi-outdoor clinical environments.
• Design must comply with South African National Standards (SANS) for accessibility, including standard heights (typically 850mm–900mm), grip diameters, and continuous support intervals.
• Fixings must be engineered for the specific substrate (concrete, steel, or masonry) and rated for dynamic load-bearing in high-traffic public areas.
• Bidders must submit technical datasheets, material certifications, and proposed installation methods for approval prior to mobilisation.
• All works must comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, including site barricading, dust/noise control, and coordination with clinic staff to minimise service disruption.

Skills and Experience Requirements

• Documented experience in supplying and installing institutional or healthcare-grade handrails, preferably within public sector or medical facilities.
• Qualified tradesperson or certified installer with proven competency in structural anchoring, metal/composite fabrication, and precision alignment.
• Familiarity with SANS accessibility regulations and municipal/public building safety codes.
• Ability to conduct accurate site surveys, interpret architectural constraints, and execute custom-fit installations.
• Project management capability to schedule deliveries, deploy skilled labour, and complete works within agreed timeframes without compromising clinic operations.
