Objectives

The primary objectives of the tender are to manage and restore the Buffelsdraai Forest, enhance biodiversity, control invasive alien plants, and promote ecological sustainability. The project aims to plant indigenous species, control invasive species, and maintain the forest to support biodiversity and climate resilience. Additionally, the project seeks to create socio-economic benefits such as job creation, skills development, and support for small businesses.

Scope

The scope includes:

• Forest restoration through planting indigenous trees and understory species.
• Control of invasive alien plants using specified herbicides and methods.
• Monitoring and reporting on planting activities, invasive species control, and project progress.
• Community engagement, stakeholder coordination, and local employment.
• Provision of GIS shapefiles, maps, and detailed reports.
• Training personnel in herbicide application, plant identification, and safety procedures.
• Maintenance of the forest and control of weeds and invasive species over 36 months.

Technical Requirements

The technical requirements include:

• Implementation of invasive alien plant control using approved herbicides (gel-based, liquid, foliar spray, scrape & paint methods).
• Use of specified equipment such as herbicide applicators, hand tools, machinery (brush cutters, chainsaws), and PPE.
• Monthly reporting with maps, species planted, team deployment, alien control efforts, and training activities.
• Compliance with environmental legislation, safety standards, and best environmental practices.
• Use of GIS-compatible shapefiles and maps for operational planning and reporting.
• Engagement in community and stakeholder meetings, with a focus on local employment and skills transfer.

Skills Requirements

The tender requires the following skills and qualifications:

• Experience in invasive alien plant control and ecological restoration.
• Qualified personnel in herbicide application, plant identification, and environmental management.
• Technical expertise in GIS mapping, spatial data management, and reporting.
• Ability to manage and coordinate teams, including community workers and contractors.
• Knowledge of relevant legislation such as the National Forests Act, NEMBA, and occupational health and safety standards.
• Experience in community engagement, training, and capacity building.
• Proven track record in similar ecological or forestry projects within South Africa.
