Objectives

The primary objective of the tender is to construct a pedestrian timber bridge at De Mond Nature Reserve, ensuring ecological sensitivity, safety, and durability. The project aims to provide a functional pedestrian crossing while minimizing environmental impact and adhering to safety and quality standards.

Scope

The scope of work includes:

• Construction of a timber pedestrian bridge across the Heuningsnes River Estuary.
• Installation of structural timber components, including poles, bearers, joists, and decking.
• Preparation and site access arrangements, including temporary works and foundation piles.
• Environmental protection measures during construction, such as sediment control and water management.
• Site restoration and demobilization upon completion.

Technical Requirements

• Construction of timber poles from sustainably sourced Eucalyptus/GUM species, pressure-treated to H6 marine exposure standards (CCA treatment).
• Use of stainless steel fixings (Grade 316) for durability in marine conditions.
• Installation of jet piles approximately 3m into the riverbed, with proper alignment and level tolerances.
• Re-use of existing bridge components where possible, provided they are in good condition.
• Construction of gabion wire cages filled with rocks at the bases of new piles between grids 9-14.
• Compliance with South African standards (SANS 457-3, SANS 1288, SABS 1200 series, etc.) for materials and construction practices.
• Implementation of environmental safeguards, including spill kits, sediment control, and water management.
• Adherence to safety protocols and environmental regulations throughout the construction process.

Skills Requirements

• Experience in timber construction, especially in ecological or sensitive environments.
• Proficiency in handling and installing pressure-treated timber and stainless steel fixings.
• Knowledge of geotechnical and foundation works, including jet pile installation.
• Ability to interpret structural drawings, specifications, and environmental management plans.
• Competence in environmental protection measures and watercourse management during construction.
• Capability to coordinate with environmental authorities and statutory bodies.
• Skills in site safety management, including hazard identification and mitigation.
• Qualified personnel for site supervision, quality assurance, and environmental monitoring.
