Objectives

The primary objective of this tender is to establish a 6-month contract with a service provider responsible for handling internal institutional medical waste at Victoria Mxenge Hospital (VMH). The provider will manage waste collection, transportation, and related activities to ensure safe and compliant waste management within the hospital environment.

Scope

The scope of work includes:

• Internal collection and transportation of infectious medical waste from storage areas to central storage.
• Collection of general waste from storage areas to municipal waste bins.
• Cleaning and maintaining hygiene in storage areas.
• Maintaining good housekeeping in the central storage area.
• Recording waste collection activities daily.
• Assisting pest control activities and labeling containers.
• Supporting recycling activities by indicating collection points.
• Managing sanitary (SHE) bins, including supply of cleaning detergents and disinfectants.
• Providing trained waste handlers for a period of six months, including relievers.

Technical Requirements

The technical specifications include:

• Proof of registration and latest proof of payment of UIF with the Department of Employment and Labour.
• Current COIDA (Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act) good standing certificate.
• Overheads and wage cost list for six months based on the total quotation, considering minimum wage standards.
• Provision of a roster covering at least 3 months.
• Compliance with health and safety standards, including provision of PPE (overalls, safety boots, gloves, masks, etc.).
• Maintenance of a comprehensive safety file with all relevant documentation.
• Training of staff on medical waste handling prior to commencement.
• Regular site visits, signing logs, and attendance at monthly meetings.
• Liability for damages caused during machinery operation.

Skills Requirements

The successful service provider must demonstrate:

• Experience in healthcare waste management and handling infectious waste.
• Qualified and trained waste handlers with proof of training.
• Ability to maintain hygiene and safety standards in a healthcare environment.
• Capacity to provide PPE and maintain safety documentation.
• Competence in record-keeping, reporting, and compliance with health and safety regulations.
• Operational capability to manage waste collection, transportation, and disposal efficiently.
• Liability management for machinery operation and property damage.
