Objectives

The primary objective of the tender is to supply, deliver, install, and commission mild steel pipes, butterfly valves, and associated fittings at Berth 208 & 209 in the Port of Richards Bay. The work aims to replace corroded firefighting system components to ensure operational safety, environmental standards, and compliance with safety regulations. The project must be completed within the specified period while maintaining high safety, quality, and environmental standards.

Scope

The scope includes:

• Supply, delivery, installation, and commissioning of mild steel pipes, butterfly valves, foam pourers, fittings, and attachments as per the detailed scope of works.
• Replacement of corroded pipes and fittings in the firefighting system at Berths 208 & 209.
• Installation of various pipes (sea water, freshwater, foam water, municipal water), valves, and associated fittings, including pressure testing and coating with fusion bonded epoxy.
• Provision of all necessary equipment, safety measures, and compliance with environmental and safety standards.
• Site preparation, security, environmental management, and coordination with port operations.

Technical Requirements

The technical requirements include:

• Use of fusion bonded epoxy coating on internal and external pipe surfaces with specified thickness and quality standards.
• Pressure testing of pipes and fittings before handover.
• Installation of fire protection components, including hydrants, monitors, and associated piping, in accordance with SANS standards and NFPA guidelines.
• Compliance with relevant South African standards (SANS 10400, SANS 1128, SANS 543, etc.) for fire safety, piping, and structural integrity.
• Installation of fire detection, alarm, and suppression systems as per specified standards.
• Provision of necessary permits, safety measures, and environmental controls during construction.
• Proper documentation, including as-built drawings, inspection records, and coating certificates.

Skills Requirements

The tender specifies that the contractor must possess:

• Trade test qualification in Mechanical (Fitter) or Plumbing trade.
• Minimum of six (6) years’ experience in installation, removal, and fitting of pipes, valves, and fittings, especially in firefighting systems.
• Qualified personnel including:
• Site Supervisor with relevant experience and qualifications.
• Qualified plumber or fitter with experience in pipework and valve installation.
• SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment, Quality) Officer with at least NQF level 6 or equivalent.
• General workers with at least five (5) years’ experience and knowledge of maintenance and small tools operation.
• Ability to prepare method statements, demonstrate previous project experience, and comply with safety and environmental standards.
• Competence in pressure testing, coating application, and installation of fire safety systems.
• Knowledge of relevant standards and regulations, including SANS, NFPA, and environmental legislation.

The contractor must demonstrate technical expertise, relevant experience, and qualified personnel capable of executing the scope of work efficiently, safely, and in compliance with all technical, safety, and environmental standards. The skills and experience of key personnel are critical for successful project delivery within the stipulated timeframe.
