Objectives

The primary objective of this tender is to conduct comprehensive geotechnical investigations and surveys at Pentrich Station, specifically along the formation from Km 4.818 to Km 6.369. The investigation aims to assess subsurface soil properties, identify causes of drainage problems, water ponding, mud pumping, and seepage issues, and provide data necessary for designing engineering solutions to ensure stability and durability of the railway formation.

Additionally, the investigation seeks to determine soil composition, moisture content, compaction levels, and other geotechnical parameters through field and laboratory testing, culminating in detailed reports with recommendations for remedial measures.

Scope

The scope of work includes:

• Conducting a series of soil tests along the affected areas, including 50 Dynamic Cone Penetration (DCP) tests to a depth of 1 meter or until refusal, at 40-meter intervals on alternating track legs.
• Excavating 20 test pits at 100-meter intervals from Km 4/818 to 6/369, each up to 1 meter deep.
• Logging soil profiles with detailed descriptions of soil type, color, texture, moisture content, and anomalies.
• Collecting disturbed and undisturbed soil samples for laboratory analysis.
• Performing laboratory tests such as sieve analysis, Atterberg limits (liquid, plastic, shrinkage), moisture content, maximum dry density, and California Bearing Ratio (CBR).
• Providing a preliminary report summarizing fieldwork and initial findings, followed by a comprehensive final report with detailed data, analysis, and recommendations.
• Ensuring all testing and sampling adhere to relevant standards (ASTM, BS, SANS).
• Completing all investigations within a maximum of 30 days from commencement.

Technical Requirements

• Perform soil tests including DCP, sieve analysis, Atterberg limits, moisture content, compaction, and CBR tests.
• Excavate and log 20 test pits with detailed soil profile descriptions.
• Follow standard procedures for all field and laboratory tests as per relevant standards.
• Provide detailed soil classification and geotechnical interpretation.
• Compile and submit a preliminary report within the investigation period, and a final detailed report with raw data, test results, photographs, and recommendations.
• Ensure safety, quality, and compliance throughout the investigation process.

Skills and Skills Requirements

• Qualified geotechnical engineers and technicians with registration with the Council for Licensure of Geoscience (or equivalent).
• Proven experience in soil investigation, geotechnical testing, and reporting, especially in railway or industrial environments.
• Capability to conduct field tests (DCP, soil sampling, excavation) and laboratory analyses (sieve analysis, Atterberg limits, CBR, moisture content).
• Knowledge of relevant standards (ASTM, BS, SANS) and best practices in geotechnical investigations.
• Ability to prepare detailed reports, including soil profiles, test data, and engineering recommendations.
• Health and safety competence to ensure safe execution of all site activities.
• Effective project management skills to complete all tasks within the 30-day timeline.
