Objectives

The primary objective of this tender is to provide manual preparation of thinnings in accordance with the specified safety and operational standards. It aims to ensure the safety of personnel through proper use and management of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and to establish clear procedures for issuing, maintaining, and controlling PPE to support safe forestry operations.

Scope

This tender covers all activities related to the manual preparation of thinnings within the South African Forestry Company Limited (SAFCOL) and its subsidiaries, including Komatiland Forests (KLF) and Indùstrias Florestais de Manica (IFLOMA). It includes the provision, issuance, maintenance, and control of PPE for all employees and contractors involved in forestry operations, ensuring compliance with safety standards across various operational areas.

Technical Requirements

• Provision of PPE certified to South African National Standards (SANS) or equivalent international standards where no SANS mark exists.
• Issuance of PPE based on operational needs, risk exposure, and task requirements.
• Proper maintenance, inspection (monthly), and replacement of PPE items.
• Use of PPE such as safety footwear, head protection, hearing protection, respiratory protection, eye/face protection, high visibility clothing, and task-specific gear.
• Clear procedures for issuing, replacing, and controlling PPE, including handling lost or damaged items and cost recovery for replacements.
• Adherence to safety zones, demarcations, and signage for noise and other hazards.

Skills Requirements

• Knowledge of PPE standards, safety regulations, and hazard management in forestry operations.
• Ability to assess operational risks and determine appropriate PPE specifications.
• Competence in PPE issuance, record-keeping, and maintenance procedures.
• Understanding of safety protocols related to working at heights, noise zones, and handling hazardous materials.
• Effective communication skills to ensure compliance and safety awareness among employees and contractors.
