Objectives

The primary objective is to procure a qualified contractor to fabricate, deliver, and install compliant stainless steel patient handrails and associated guard rails at Doris Goodwin Hospital. The project aims to enhance patient safety, improve ward accessibility, and upgrade infrastructure while maintaining uninterrupted hospital operations.

Scope of Work

The contract encompasses the complete execution of approximately 28.6 metres of handrails, including manufacturing, supply, installation, and final site cleanup. Key scope elements include:

• Fabrication and installation of grade 304 stainless steel handrails, mid-rails, posts, base plates, and fittings.
• Installation of galvanized steel guard rails (18.5m length) with concrete-filled vertical supports.
• All necessary masonry, patching, painting, and structural anchoring to secure installations.
• Execution within an active healthcare facility, requiring careful scheduling to minimize disruption to medical services.
• A four-week contract period from site handover, followed by a one-year warranty period.

Technical Requirements

• Materials & Finish: Grade 304 stainless steel throughout, with a satin brushed finish on top rails.
• Dimensions & Layout: Top rails (Ø50mm × 2.0mm) at 1000mm height; posts (Ø38mm × 2.0mm) spaced at maximum 1200mm centres; mid-rails (Ø32mm × 1.5mm) at 500mm height.
• Fixings & Support: 100×100×6mm base plates secured with M10 stainless steel chemical anchors (four per plate), heavy-duty brackets, and fully welded end returns/caps.
• Fabrication Standards: TIG welding, grinding, polishing, pickling, and passivation required. All joints must be smooth, continuous, and free of sharp edges.
• Compliance: Must adhere to SANS 10400, SANS 10600-S (accessibility and safety standards), National Building Regulations, and KZNPA specifications. A structural engineer’s certificate is mandatory.
• Additional Works: Contractor must submit a comprehensive safety file prior to commencement.

Note on Technical Terms: Pickling/passivation refers to a chemical cleaning process that removes surface contaminants and enhances the natural corrosion-resistant oxide layer on stainless steel. Chemical anchors are epoxy-based fixing systems used to securely mount fixtures into concrete substrates without causing mechanical stress or cracking.

• Proven track record in executing similar construction and installation projects within public healthcare facilities, supported by documented proof of past performance.
• Technical proficiency in precision stainless steel fabrication, TIG welding, structural anchoring, and compliance with South African accessibility and building codes.
• Strong project management and logistical planning capabilities to meet the four-week delivery timeline and uphold the one-year warranty.
• Ability to operate safely and efficiently in live clinical environments, implementing strict noise, dust, and workflow control measures.
• Administrative competence to compile and submit all mandatory compliance documentation, including Central Supplier Database (CSD) registration, tax clearance verification, SBD declaration forms, and detailed pricing schedules.
