Objectives

The primary objective of the tender is to procure pest control services at GJ Crookes Hospital to effectively manage and eliminate various pests, including insects, rodents, birds, and other vermin, across multiple hospital facilities. The service aims to ensure a safe, hygienic, and pest-free environment within both clinical and non-clinical areas, while minimizing human exposure to pesticides and adhering to environmental and safety standards.

Scope

The scope of work includes:

• Management, inspection, prevention, and treatment of pests such as insects (flies, ants, moths, etc.), stinging insects (bees, wasps, etc.), rodents (mice, rats), birds, snakes, and other vertebrates.
• Services across all hospital areas including wards, consultation rooms, kitchens, offices, service entrances, waste areas, underground systems, parking, and perimeter fences.
• Control of pests in both above-ground and below-ground facilities, including air ducts, sewer systems, stormwater services, and external surroundings.
• Implementation of integrated pest management strategies emphasizing non-chemical controls first, followed by chemical methods if necessary.
• Relocation of birds, snakes, and other animals where possible, in collaboration with environmental health authorities and relevant organizations.
• Provision of routine and on-call pest control services, with specified frequencies, and preparation of pest control plans and reports.
• Adherence to environmental, health, and safety regulations, including restrictions on certain pesticides and application methods.

Technical Requirements

The technical requirements include:

• Development and submission of a comprehensive pest control programme, including inspection, installation, and handover processes.
• Compliance with legislation such as the Fertilizers, Farm Feeds, Agricultural Remedies and Stock Remedies Act, 1947, and the Pest Control Operator Regulations.
• Use of environmentally friendly pesticides and non-chemical control methods as the primary approach.
• Proper installation, maintenance, and monitoring of bait stations, traps, and pest-proofing measures.
• Provision of certified pest control operators with relevant qualifications and experience.
• Preparation of detailed service schedules, treatment reports, and records of pest management activities.
• Implementation of safety measures, including PPE, signage, and emergency procedures.
• Regular inspection, monitoring, and reporting on pest activity, treatment efficacy, and compliance.

Skills Requirements

The tenderer must demonstrate:

• Qualified and certified pest control operators with valid registration and certifications in accordance with South African legislation.
• Experience in managing pest control in healthcare or similar environments, with knowledge of hospital hygiene standards.
• Ability to develop and implement integrated pest management strategies tailored to hospital settings.
• Competence in environmental safety, hazardous material handling, and compliance with health and safety regulations.
• Capability to prepare detailed reports, service plans, and maintain accurate records of pest control activities.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills to liaise with hospital staff and environmental health practitioners.
• Capacity to respond promptly to emergency pest control needs and adapt services as required.
