Tender Summary: Repair Underground Asbestos Burst Pipe

Objectives

The primary objective is to urgently locate, excavate, and repair a burst underground asbestos water pipe situated near the "Scotties" area at GJ Crookes Hospital. The project aims to restore uninterrupted water supply while ensuring strict compliance with occupational health, safety, and environmental standards mandated for asbestos-containing infrastructure.

Scope of Work

• Pipe Tracing & Excavation: Identify the underground pipeline (approximately 900 mm deep) and excavate to a depth of 1 200 mm, including breaking through asphalt/tar and concrete foundations.
• Leak Identification & Isolation: Temporarily blank the existing line outside the wall and activate water pressure to visually confirm the leak location.
• Pipe Repair & Reconnection: Repair the damaged asbestos section (estimated 5-metre length) and securely connect a new repair line to the temporarily isolated existing pipeline.
• Excavation Support: Install temporary shuttering or shoring to prevent soil collapse during trenching.
• Site Rehabilitation: Remove all temporary isolation lines, properly seal them off, backfill trenches, compact the substrate, and reinstate the ground to its original state.
• Final Finishing: Construct and cure a 100 mm thick concrete slab over the restored excavation zone.

Technical Requirements

• Full adherence to occupational health and safety legislation throughout all operational phases.
• Mandatory SO CIDB grading for plumbing and water infrastructure works.
• Submission of three to four verifiable reference orders demonstrating prior execution of similar underground pipe repair projects.
• All pricing must be firm, fully inclusive of labour, materials, plant, and VAT (where applicable), with a 90-day quotation validity period.
• Contract is classified as once-off and urgent due to continuous hospital operations and high pedestrian/vehicle traffic in the vicinity.

• Proven expertise in underground utility locating, mechanical excavation, and asbestos pipe remediation.
• Competency in trench shoring techniques to mitigate collapse risks and protect personnel.

• Strict capability to manage hazardous material handling, dust suppression, and safe waste removal protocols.
