Objectives

The primary objective of this tender is to engage a qualified waste recycling contractor/service provider to deliver waste separation, sorting, weighing, and recycling services at the Durban ICC and Durban Exhibition Centre (DEC) for a period of 12 months. The service aims to maintain and enhance the facilities' compliance with international environmental standards, specifically ISO 14001, and to ensure environmental sustainability through effective waste management and recycling practices.

Scope

The scope of work includes:

• Provision of waste separation, sorting, weighing, and recycling services for various materials including paper, glass, cardboard, cans, PET, polystyrene, mixed plastics, cardboard cores, and other recyclable materials.
• Deployment of adequately resourced and trained personnel to perform waste handling activities safely and efficiently.
• Use of sorting frames, hessian bags, and tarps for recyclable materials.
• Generation of monthly and ad hoc reports on recycled waste for both sites.
• Compliance with relevant legislation, environmental policies, and safety standards.
• Provision of cleaning chemicals with SDS and maintenance of cleaning routines for recycling areas and bins.
• Maintaining valid licenses and permits for waste removal and recycling, including transportation permits and registration with SAWIS.
• Calibration and use of a certified scale (minimum 200kg capacity) for weighing activities.
• Collaboration with waste disposal requirements and providing training and audits as needed.

Technical Requirements

The technical requirements include:

• Valid licenses for waste removal and recycling issued by the Department of Environmental Affairs or accredited third-party recyclers.
• Valid trade permits from eThekwini Municipality and DSW transportation permits.
• Registration with the South African Waste Information System (SAWIS).
• Use of calibrated scales with calibration certificates indicating last and next calibration dates.
• Provision of sorting frames, hessian bags, tarps, and cleaning chemicals with SDS.
• Deployment of a capable workforce to handle physically strenuous activities safely.
• Provision of monthly and ad hoc reports on recycled waste quantities.
• Compliance with ISO 14001 and the National Environmental Management Act.
• Adherence to safety, health, and environmental policies of the Durban ICC.

Skills Requirements

The successful service provider must demonstrate:

• Experience in waste sorting and recycling services, with traceable references.
• Ability to deploy a trained and capable workforce familiar with occupational health and safety standards.
• Knowledge of applicable legislation, permits, and environmental management systems.
• Capability to provide detailed reports and audits on waste recycling activities.
• Proficiency in handling and maintaining weighing equipment and calibration certificates.
• Ability to work flexibly within specified hours, including weekends and event-dependent schedules.
• Competence in maintaining safety and cleanliness standards at all times.
