Objectives

The primary objective of this tender is to appoint a qualified service provider to design, supply, and construct a new nursery shade house at the Harold Porter National Botanical Garden. The project aims to enhance nursery infrastructure by providing a structurally sound, UV-stabilized shade house with appropriate irrigation, flooring, doors, benches, fertilizer tanks, and drainage systems, all compliant with relevant standards and codes.

Scope

The scope of work includes:

• Design of the nursery shade house structure, including detailed drawings and approval by a registered engineer or technologist.
• Site preparation involving demolition of existing structures, rubble removal, site leveling, and trenching.
• Supply, installation, and construction of the structural frame using galvanized steel tubing.
• Supply and installation of shade covering made from UV-stabilized HDPE netting in emerald green.
• Construction and installation of sliding doors, irrigation systems, drainage channels, and concrete flooring.
• Provision of structural steel benches, fertilizer tanks, and a water tap system inside the shade house.
• Construction of drainage channels with specified slope and dimensions.
• Installation of a fertilizer mixing system, pumps, and associated plumbing.
• All work to be coordinated with garden personnel, adhering to site access and safety protocols.

Technical Requirements

The technical specifications and requirements for the tender include:

Design & Construction

• Design of the structure to comply with SANS building codes, signed off by a registered professional.
• Structural frame: Galvanized hollow steel tubes, rectangular shape, 14m x 19m x 3m height.
• Shade netting: High-density polyethylene (HDPE), 80% UV stabilized, emerald green, with reinforced edges and eyelets at 1m intervals.
• Flooring: Mesh-reinforced concrete slab, 14m x 19m, 80mm thick, with anti-slip exposed aggregate finish.
• Doors: Galvanized steel sliding doors with mesh surface, size 2m x 2m, fitted with stainless steel sliding tracks and bolt locks.

Irrigation System

• Manual irrigation system with rotating nozzles, operating at 1.5-3 bar pressure, flow rate 20 l/h.
• Components include UV-resistant plastic sprinklers, 25mm PE pipes, mesh filters (100-130 micron), and plastic shut-off valves.
• Water supply: Connection to municipal main, with a tap inside the shade house for watering cans.
• Drainage channels: Concrete, 150mm deep and wide, with a 2% slope for gravity drainage.

Structural Benches & Fertilizer Tank

• Steel benches: Galvanized steel, 1.5m wide, 5m long, 1m high, two-tier shelving, 10 units.
• Fertilizer tank: 1000L, made from UV-resistant virgin LLDPE, with inlet/outlet fittings, positioned adjacent to the shade house.
• Pump: Centrifugal, 0.75Kw, 230V, with flow control, installed next to the shade house.

Additional Technical Requirements

• All designs and construction activities must adhere to relevant SANS standards, municipal regulations, and occupational health and safety laws.
• Construction must be coordinated with garden operations, minimizing disruption and ensuring safety.
• All materials and workmanship shall be of high quality, new, and compliant with manufacturer specifications.
• Guarantees: All new parts shall be guaranteed for 12 months from project completion.
• Pricing: Quotations must include detailed cost breakdowns, VAT inclusive, and address all specifications.
• Contractor must submit all mandatory documentation, including CIDB registration, CSD registration, tax compliance, B-BBEE status, and proof of insurance.
