Objectives

The primary objective of this tender is to appoint a qualified and experienced contractor to replace the shade net roof of the current nursery and to construct a tree nursery tunnel at the Mokopane Biodiversity Conservation Centre on behalf of the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI). The project aims to improve nursery infrastructure by installing new shade netting, supporting structures, and constructing a tunnel to facilitate biodiversity conservation efforts.

Scope

The scope of work includes:

• Removal of existing shade netting roof of the nursery.
• Installation of additional pipe braces into the existing A-frame roof structure.
• Covering the roof with new shade netting as specified.
• Construction of a tree nursery tunnel measuring approximately 20m wide by 50m long, including excavation, foundation, erection of structural trusses, purlins, gates, and covering with shade netting.
• Site establishment, site clearance, waste removal, and site handover.
• Manufacturing components off-site with subsequent on-site assembly, including welding, bolting, and fixing of structural elements.
• Provision of workshop drawings within one week of appointment for review and approval.
• Adherence to specifications, standards, and safety regulations throughout the project.

Technical Requirements

The technical requirements for the tender include:

Materials and Components

• Shade netting: Knittex Spectranet or similar, UV stabilized, 32% shade factor, 95 GSM, compliant with SABS 1703:2003 (or later versions).
• Pipe tubing: 50mm, 42mm, and 38mm diameter galvanized steel pipes with 2mm wall thickness.
• Structural steel: Trusses, purlins, and supports fabricated from steel sections (e.g., 50mm x 2mm, 30mm x 2mm).
• Bolts, nuts, washers: Galvanized, M8, 75mm length, 8.8 strength class.
• Fencing: Diamond mesh fencing for roof support, supplied by SANBI.

Construction and Structural

• Foundation: Excavation of foundation holes (approx. 0.6m x 0.6m x 0.6m) for uprights in clay soils.
• Concrete: 25 MPa concrete for foundation and pipe uprights.
• Assembly: Bolted connections of trusses, purlins, and gates; off-site manufacturing of components with on-site assembly only.
• Gates: Two inward swinging gates (2m x 3m) with lockable latches.
• Covering: Shade netting secured with twin lacing, covering entire structure including side walls and roof.

Design and Documentation

• Workshop drawings to be submitted within one week of appointment for approval.
• Structural design details, including truss configuration, connection points, and fixing methods, must be provided.
• Design to ensure stability, durability, and compliance with relevant standards and safety regulations.

Safety and Compliance

• Adherence to Occupational Health and Safety Act regulations, including preparation of a Health and Safety Plan.
• Compliance with municipal laws, building regulations, and environmental management standards.
• Site safety measures, incident reporting, and safety audits to be implemented and documented.

Additional Technical Requirements

• All work to be executed in accordance with manufacturer specifications, relevant standards, and best practices.
• Materials and workmanship must be of high quality, new, and fit for purpose.
• All components must be installed securely, with proper fixing at brackets, bolts, and supports to withstand environmental conditions.
• Site clearance, waste removal, and final handover to be completed to SANBI’s satisfaction.
