Objectives

The primary objective of this tender is to appoint a qualified Service Provider to inspect, repair, and maintain various thatch roofs at the Pretoria National Botanical Garden, specifically at the Milkplum and Education Centre buildings. The service aims to ensure the integrity, safety, and longevity of the thatch roofing structures through comprehensive inspection, necessary repairs, and maintenance activities.

Scope

The scope of work includes:

• Inspection of all thatch roofs at the specified sites to assess condition and provide recommendations.
• Thatch pulls and combing where identified as necessary.
• Replacement of damaged or worn thatch areas with new thatch.
• Repair of ridge capping where required.
• Installation of bid wire where identified as needed.
• Application of fire retardant spray where necessary.
• Maintaining tension of twines supporting the thatch.
• Securing bolts of timber roof structures as needed.

The work applies to both the Milkplum and Education Centre buildings, with site inspections to be conducted beforehand to determine specific requirements.

Technical Requirements

The technical requirements for the project include:

• Comprehensive inspection and assessment of existing thatch roofs.
• Provision of recommendations based on inspection findings.
• Execution of repairs including thatch replacement, ridge capping repair, and fire retardant treatment.
• Installation of bid wire and tensioning of supporting twines.
• Securing timber structure bolts.
• Adherence to safety standards and quality management during execution.
• Provision of detailed cost breakdowns, including VAT, for all work components.

Skills and Qualifications Requirements

The successful Service Provider must demonstrate:

• Relevant experience in thatch roof inspection, repair, and maintenance.
• Provision of at least five verifiable reference letters for similar projects completed in the last ten years.
• Qualified personnel with appropriate certifications and experience, including a Contracts Manager, Site Agent, and Occupational Health and Safety Officer/Manager.
• Full-time on-site personnel with proven expertise in roofing and timber structure repairs.
• Ownership or rental of appropriate equipment and tools necessary for thatch roof repairs.
• Compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards, including valid public liability insurance and proof of good standing with the Compensation Commissioner.
• Ability to submit a detailed project methodology, work plan, and milestones demonstrating practical and realistic execution strategies.
• Provision of a comprehensive team organogram and resource plan.
