Objectives

The primary objective of this tender is to appoint two (2) service providers to supply and deliver meat carcasses to the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) National Zoological Garden (NZG) over a period of three (3) years. The service providers will ensure the provision of high-quality meat carcasses to meet the nutritional requirements of the captive animals, supporting their welfare and dietary needs as prescribed by qualified animal nutritionists and veterinarians. The contract aims to facilitate a fair, market-related pricing structure through negotiation and rotational usage of the service providers to ensure equitable expenditure distribution.

Scope

The scope encompasses the supply and delivery of meat carcasses, including beef and horse carcasses, to SANBI NZG Pretoria campus as and when required. Estimated quantities include approximately 26,000 kg of beef carcasses annually and 500 kg of horse carcasses, with the understanding that actual consumption may vary based on operational needs. The service involves cold chain management, proper handling, and timely delivery of carcasses in good condition, adhering to specified standards and procedures. The contract covers the entire process from order placement to delivery, including offloading, packing, and compliance with SANBI’s quality and safety standards.

Technical Requirements

• Provision of high-quality, properly chilled meat carcasses in accordance with SANS 10156:2014 standards.
• Delivery of carcasses in good condition, with frozen carcasses not accepted.
• Use of refrigerated transport, with proof of rental agreements if applicable.
• Immediate notification to SANBI NZG if delivery cannot be made within 72 hours of order receipt.
• Offloading and packing in designated cold storage facilities at SANBI NZG.
• Compliance with health, hygiene, and safety standards during handling and transportation.
• Provision of mandatory documentation including proof of tax compliance, primary source of meat, and relevant references.
• Adherence to specified quantities and delivery schedules, with flexibility for "as and when required" orders.

Skills and Qualification Requirements

• Proven experience in supplying and delivering animal feed, specifically meat carcasses, over the past five (5) years, supported by reference letters and contract details.
• Demonstrated capacity to supply meat carcasses in accordance with quality standards and delivery timelines.
• Ability to provide relevant documentation such as reference letters, contract evidence, and proof of prior supply to reputable clients.
• Financial capacity evidenced by a valid bank rating code indicating the ability to handle contractual commitments.
• Knowledge of and compliance with health, safety, and hygiene standards applicable to meat handling and transportation.
• Capability to develop and implement contingency plans to ensure consistent supply and manage shortages or emergencies.
• Qualified personnel with expertise in cold chain management, meat handling, and quality assurance processes.
