Objectives

The primary objective of this tender is to establish a panel of freelance science writers who will produce various science-related content for the Water Research Commission (WRC) over a period of thirty-six (36) months. The writers will support the WRC by creating research summaries, publications, press releases, website content, and other science communication materials to promote water research, environmental science, and related sectors.

Scope

The scope of work includes:

• Developing and packaging scientific and technical content for multiple platforms such as brochures, booklets, conference reports, magazine features, press releases, policy notes, speeches, and website/social media copy.
• Authoring articles and publications related to water, environmental, and science sectors.
• Working on an as-needed basis, with writers being called upon for specific projects or publications.
• Remuneration at a rate per word not exceeding R7.00 (plus VAT), with a maximum of 2,000 words per Water Wheel article.
• Ensuring content quality, accuracy, and relevance, with experience in science or environmental communication preferred.

Technical Requirements

The technical requirements for the tender include:

• Proven experience in translating scientific content into accessible written materials.
• Minimum of five years’ specialist experience in science, environmental, or water sector communication/writing.
• Excellent command of written English; proficiency in other official languages is advantageous.
• Ability to work under pressure and manage time effectively.
• Experience in authoring various types of science publications, press releases, web content, and speech writing.
• Availability to work on a rotational basis, with proximity to project locations being an advantage.

Skills Requirements

The skills and qualifications required for service providers include:

• Strong writing skills with a focus on clarity, accuracy, and engagement in scientific communication.
• Qualification(s) in science, environmental science, communication, or related fields.
• At least five years’ experience in specialist science or environmental writing.
• Ability to produce high-quality content in English, with additional language skills as an advantage.
• Strong time management and ability to deliver content within deadlines.
• Experience in authoring a variety of scientific and technical materials such as articles, reports, press releases, and speeches.
