Objectives

The primary objective of this tender is to appoint a service provider responsible for the engineering design and execution of a pilot-scale anthropogenic CO₂ injection well and associated infrastructure over a period of twenty-four months in Mpumalanga, South Africa. This includes developing a safe and effective well design, constructing the injection infrastructure, implementing monitoring systems, and ensuring compliance with relevant standards to support carbon capture and storage (CCS) initiatives aligned with South Africa’s climate mitigation and energy transition goals.

Scope

The scope encompasses:

• Design of one or more CO₂ injection wells, considering geological data and reservoir characteristics.
• Construction and drilling of the injection well(s), including associated surface infrastructure such as the CO₂ delivery and injection facilities.
• Development and installation of a comprehensive monitoring network for measurement, verification, and validation (MMV) of CO₂ movement and storage, including geophysical, subsurface, and surface monitoring techniques.
• Preparation of detailed project schedules, including design, drilling, injection, and monitoring phases.
• Provision of technical capability, track record, and experience of key personnel involved in similar projects (oil & gas, geothermal, CCS).
• Development of a bespoke engineering solution compliant with standards such as API and US UIC Class VI well guidelines.
• Environmental and social impact assessments, with relevant authorizations obtained prior to construction.
• Site-specific geological characterization, including reservoir modeling, well logs, and geophysical data analysis.
• Design of associated infrastructure, including surface equipment, civil works, and safety systems.
• Execution of drilling, injection, and monitoring activities, with progress reporting and project close-out documentation.

Technical Requirements

The technical requirements include:

• Design of injection wells targeting deep saline fractured aquifers (Witwatersrand Supergroup) and basaltic reservoirs (Ventersdorp Supergroup), with injection capacities of at least 10,000 tonnes per well.
• Use of well standards aligned with international best practices, such as API and US UIC Class VI guidelines.
• Development of a detailed well design including casing, cementing, and well control systems.
• Construction and drilling of the wells, with the ability to access reservoirs at depths around 1,200 to 1,500 meters.
• Implementation of surface infrastructure for CO₂ delivery, including pipelines, pumps, and safety systems.
• Design and installation of a comprehensive MMV system, incorporating geophysical surveys, downhole sensors, and reservoir sampling, with flexibility to select monitoring technologies based on final MMV plan.
• Preparation of a project schedule covering design, drilling, injection, and post-injection monitoring over 24 months.
• Provision of qualified personnel with proven experience in reservoir engineering, well design, drilling, and CCS projects.
• Compliance with environmental legislation, including obtaining necessary environmental authorizations and conducting impact assessments.
• Development of contingency plans, site rehabilitation, and equipment demobilization procedures.
• Clear cost breakdown, including engineering design, drilling, construction, monitoring, and close-out activities, with a disbursement plan and adherence to VAT and currency requirements.
