Objectives

The primary objective of this research project is to assess and optimize dust control systems for roof bolters and continuous miners in underground coal mines. The project aims to evaluate existing practices, identify maintenance challenges, and develop integrated, practical dust control interventions. Ultimately, the goal is to enhance dust suppression effectiveness, safeguard miners' respiratory health, and support the Mine Health and Safety Council (MHSC) in achieving occupational health milestones related to reducing respirable dust exposure and preventing occupational lung diseases.

Scope

The scope of work includes:

• Assessing the effectiveness, maintenance, and operational limitations of dust control measures applied to continuous miners and roof bolters in South African underground coal mines.
• Monitoring dust exposure levels using gravimetric and real-time instruments, establishing baseline exposure data, and identifying high-risk activities and conditions.
• Analyzing airflow patterns, ventilation effectiveness, and environmental factors influencing dust dispersion.
• Evaluating existing dust control equipment, operational practices, and environmental conditions to identify gaps and opportunities for improvement.
• Developing practical, integrated dust control strategies, including controls, ventilation optimization, and maintenance practices.
• Presenting findings, validating results, and engaging stakeholders through workshops and consultations.
• Producing a guidance document with recommendations, minimum performance standards, and monitoring approaches aligned with regulatory requirements.

Technical Requirements

The technical requirements for the project include:

• Conducting applied research on dust control measures specific to underground coal mining environments.
• Using gravimetric and real-time dust monitoring instruments in accordance with recognized standards.
• Assessing airflow patterns and ventilation systems to optimize dust suppression.
• Evaluating maintenance practices and operational limitations of dust control equipment.
• Developing a comprehensive project methodology addressing participant engagement, datasets, study sites, instruments, and procedures.
• Producing detailed reports on literature review, dust control technologies, field sampling, airflow analysis, and integrated control strategies.
• Delivering a final report and draft guidance document with practical recommendations and minimum performance criteria.

Skills Requirements

The project team must possess the following skills and experience:

• At least 5 years’ experience in applied research related to dust control, occupational hygiene, or mine safety in the South African mining industry.
• Members with expertise in the design, implementation, and maintenance of dust control systems for continuous miners and roof bolters.
• Experience in conducting environmental monitoring, including gravimetric and real-time dust sampling.
• Knowledge of airflow and ventilation optimization in underground mining environments.
• Qualified occupational hygienists or environmental control specialists with relevant certifications.
• Proven ability to develop practical, implementable solutions and guidance documents for mining operations.
• Strong project management and stakeholder engagement skills, including presenting findings and validating results with industry stakeholders.
