Objectives

The primary objective of this tender is to solicit bids for the Cut, Make and Trim of Gorget Patches and the Supply of Embroidered Items for the South African Air Force. The project aims to procure high-quality embroidered patches and insignia that meet specified standards and design requirements, ensuring uniformity and durability for personnel identification and ceremonial purposes.

Scope

The scope encompasses:

• The manufacture and supply of various gorget patches for generals, colonels, chaplains, and other ranks, including both regular and miniature ceremonial versions.
• The supply of embroidered items such as badges, insignia, and patches as detailed in the specifications.
• The supply of outer materials, backing fabrics, gold wires, braids, buttons, and other component materials required for the production of the patches.
• The provision of pre-production samples, testing, inspection, and quality assurance processes.
• The packaging, marking, and delivery of the embroidered items to designated locations.

The scope also includes compliance with specific standards, specifications, and quality assurance procedures as outlined in the tender documents.

Technical Requirements

The technical requirements specify:

• Use of approved materials such as woollen melton fabric, calico backing, gold wire, and specific thread types and colours.
• Embroidery to be of first-class workmanship, free from defects, spots, stains, and loose threads.
• Precise dimensions and sizes for each type of gorget patch and insignia, with tolerances specified.
• Application of specific embroidery techniques, including hand embroidery with gold wire and piping braid.
• Use of approved components such as brass plates with prongs, clutches, and sewing threads, conforming to standards.
• Packaging in sealed plastics envelopes and bulk containers, with proper marking and documentation.
• Adherence to specified standards such as SANS 79, SANS 80, SANS 1401-7, and other referenced documents.
• Compliance with inspection, testing, and quality assurance procedures, including pre-production samples and in-process inspections.

Skills Requirements

The tenderer must demonstrate:

• Proficiency in embroidery and sewing techniques, particularly hand embroidery with gold wire and piping braid.
• Experience in manufacturing military insignia and patches according to strict specifications and standards.
• Capability to produce high-quality, durable embroidered items with consistent workmanship.
• Ability to manage quality control, inspection, and testing processes as per the specified procedures.
• Competence in sourcing and handling approved component materials, including fabrics, wires, buttons, and threads.
• Capacity to package and deliver items securely and in compliance with packaging standards.
• Knowledge of relevant standards and specifications, including SANS and CKS standards.
• Ability to provide pre-production samples, conduct testing, and meet delivery timelines.
