Objectives

The primary objective of this tender is to refurbish two 20 MVA traction transformers at various substations within the Richards Bay depot. The works involve repairing transformer oil leaks, filtering and testing oil, replacing silica gel breathers, and ensuring the transformers are energized safely after refurbishment. The overarching goal is to restore the transformers to operational standards, ensuring safety, reliability, and compliance with relevant standards and regulations.

Scope

The scope of work includes:

• Repairing oil leaks on two specified transformers at Kombe and Mpanda substations.
• Filtering and testing transformer oil before and after refurbishment, with samples submitted to the Project Manager.
• Replacing silica gel breathers and topping up transformers with virgin oil (~210L).
• Purifying and pumping back oil under vacuum into transformers.
• Cleaning, painting, and rehabilitating transformer tanks and surrounding soil.
• Ensuring safety procedures, site access, and environmental standards are adhered to.
• Providing all necessary equipment, safety measures, and site facilities for the duration of the project.

Technical Requirements

• Oil filtering, sampling, and testing in accordance with BBB0349 and BBF8190 standards.
• Oil storage in clean, impermeable vessels and re-filtering if necessary.
• Painting of transformer tanks and components with specified colours and minimum thickness (125 microns).
• Rehabilitation of soil around transformers with specified stone size (19mm-25mm).
• Compliance with safety, environmental, and health regulations, including site induction and hazard management.
• Proper documentation of oil test results, safety procedures, and site activities.
• Use of approved and certified equipment and materials, with proof of compliance.

Skills Requirements

• Technical Expertise: Experience in transformer refurbishment, oil filtration, and testing, with knowledge of relevant standards.
• Project Management: Ability to plan and execute the works within specified timeframes, including program development and adherence to deadlines.
• Health & Safety: Competence in safety procedures, site induction, hazard management, and compliance with occupational health and safety legislation.
• Environmental Management: Ability to manage soil rehabilitation, waste disposal, and environmental standards.
• Documentation & Reporting: Skills in recording test results, safety records, and progress reports.
• Teamwork & Communication: Effective coordination with Transnet personnel, subcontractors, and site staff, including attendance at safety meetings and site inspections.
