Objectives

The primary objective of this project is to rehabilitate and enhance the functionality of the Mbizana Red Hub Grain In-take Pit. The works aim to restore the pit’s full operational capacity, improve safety and reliability, reduce maintenance needs, and protect stored grain from moisture-related damage and spoilage. Specific goals include eliminating water ingress, preventing groundwater and surface water seepage, managing residual water ingress through discharge piping, collection tanks, and submersible pumps, and ensuring the long-term durability and safety of the facility.

Scope

The scope encompasses all civil, structural, fabrication, waterproofing, and drainage activities necessary to refurbish the existing grain intake pit. The project involves:

• Mobilization and site setup
• Construction of the grain intake pit and external concrete collection tank
• Internal waterproofing and ensuring watertightness
• Fabrication and installation of doors with weatherproofing
• Testing, commissioning, and handover of the completed works
• All related civil, structural, waterproofing, drainage, and safety measures

The works will be carried out in stages, including site preparation, construction, internal works, door fabrication, testing, and demobilization, all in accordance with design specifications, safety, and quality standards.

Technical Requirements

The technical requirements include adherence to:

• SABS 1200 Standardized Specifications (General, Engineer’s Office, Cable Ducts, etc.)
• Construction and management standards per SANS 1921 series, including earthworks, site safety, and environmental management
• Design approval for temporary works and construction sequencing
• Use of approved materials, plant, and equipment, compliant with relevant standards
• Waterproofing with 250-micron consolid plastics sheeting sealed at laps
• Construction of reinforced concrete structures with specified concrete strength (25 MPa/19mm)
• Installation of submersible pumps, HDPE piping, and associated fittings
• Electrical systems including distribution boards, conduits, conductors, earthing, surge protection, and lightning protection, compliant with SANS and relevant regulations
• Environmental management, including stormwater control, site rehabilitation, and waste management
• Health and safety plans aligned with Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations

Skills Requirements

The tenderer must demonstrate:

• Experience in similar civil, structural, and waterproofing projects, particularly involving water ingress management and refurbishment of industrial facilities
• Proven capability in executing construction works involving reinforced concrete, waterproofing, and structural fabrication
• Qualified key personnel including a Contracts Manager, Site Agent, and Lead Engineer, with relevant certifications and a minimum of 10 years post-qualification experience
• Competence in electrical installation, including control panels, wiring, earthing, surge and lightning protection, and compliance with SANS standards
• Ability to manage environmental, health, and safety requirements effectively
• Capability to coordinate with multiple stakeholders, including engineers, safety officers, and environmental officers
• Provision of proof of CIDB grading of 1CE or higher, and relevant project experience with references
