Objectives

The primary objectives of this tender are to develop and implement a conservation program aimed at managing carbon sequestration within the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency’s (MTPA) nature reserves. Specific goals include:

• Restoration of land degraded by activities such as overgrazing, fires, illegal mining, and poaching.
• Establishment of carbon-free reserves to mitigate climate change impacts.
• Infrastructure upgrades to support conservation efforts.
• Job creation through project implementation and management.
• Research and development of strategies to limit carbon loss from land degradation.

Scope

The scope encompasses conducting research and developing a comprehensive conservation program targeting specific reserves, including:

• Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve
• Loskop Dam Nature Reserve
• Songimvelo Nature Reserve
• Manyeleli Nature Reserve
• Barberton Nature Reserve

The project involves site due diligence, environmental compliance, stakeholder engagement, and the formulation of strategies to enhance carbon sequestration. It also includes infrastructure upgrades and sustainable land management practices to ensure long-term carbon storage and ecosystem health.

Technical Requirements

The technical requirements for the tender include:

• Research and Conservation Planning: Conduct baseline assessments, identify degradation causes, and develop tailored conservation strategies.
• Land Restoration and Management: Implement land restoration activities that promote carbon sequestration, such as soil amendments and vegetation management.
• Monitoring and Verification: Establish robust systems for monitoring, reporting, and verifying carbon sequestration impacts, aligned with accredited standards (e.g., SA Carbon Credit scheme).
