Objectives

The primary objective of this tender is to source an approved service provider responsible for the removal and disposal of hazardous biological, laboratory, and other biological waste. The service must ensure proper disposal or incineration in compliance with prescribed legislation, over a contract period of five (5) years at iThemba LABS Cape Town.

Scope

The scope of the contract includes:

• Removal and disposal of hazardous biological waste generated at the iThemba LABS site in Faure/Eerste River, Cape Town.
• Waste streams from specific departments such as Radionuclide Production, Radiation Biophysics, Tandetron, Occupational Health Clinic, Main Kitchen, and Ablution Facilities.
• Types of waste include sharps, contaminated items, cultures, spilled substances, used PPE, expired pharmaceuticals, foodstuffs, and sanitary waste.
• Provision of waste receptacles and containers with appropriate signage.
• Transport of waste using vehicles compliant with legislative requirements.
• Proper incineration or disposal of collected waste, with certification of safe disposal after each collection.

Technical Requirements

The service provider must:

• Abide by relevant legislation including the National Road Traffic Act, SANS 10231, Occupational Health and Safety Act, NEMA, and Waste Act.
• Register with the IPWIS system and provide proof of registration as an official waste management service provider.
• Supply appropriate waste receptacles and ensure their retrieval on a scheduled basis (bi-weekly).
• Use vehicles outfitted as per legislative standards for hazardous waste transport.
• Ensure drivers are trained in handling, packing, and transportation of hazardous biological waste, equipped with PPE.
• Utilize approved disposal methods (incineration) and provide certificates of safe disposal after each collection.
• Maintain and submit safety files/method statements and conduct audits of waste removal processes.

Skills Requirements

The successful bidder must demonstrate:

• Compliance with all relevant legislation and safety standards.
• Provision of certified staff trained in waste handling and transportation.
• Capability to supply and manage waste receptacles and containers.
• Experience in hazardous biological waste removal and disposal, including incineration processes.
• Ability to provide necessary certifications, licenses, and safety documentation.
• Capacity to provide detailed process and action plans for waste removal activities.
• Provision of proof of registration as an approved waste handler and relevant environmental management certifications.
