Objectives

The primary objective of this tender is to procure professional geotechnical services for the assessment and investigation of soil and ground conditions at storm-damaged school sites in Limpopo Province. Specifically, the services aim to support the renovation, expansion, and construction of new school facilities at Mangolwane Secondary School and Morethuse Primary School. The investigations will inform design and construction decisions, ensuring structural stability and safety of the new and existing school infrastructure.

Scope

The scope of work includes:

• Conducting geotechnical investigations at the specified school sites, including excavation of inspection pits, sampling, logging, and profiling of soil and rock conditions.
• Performing laboratory testing on collected samples, such as grading, CBR, Atterberg limits, and other geotechnical tests.
• Preparing comprehensive geotechnical reports that describe site conditions, regional geology, groundwater, and potential geotechnical issues.
• Assessing existing foundations and structures for renovations, including evaluation of foundation types, depths, and concrete and brick strength.
• Providing recommendations for foundation design, excavation, and backfill based on investigation results.
• Delivering geotechnical zones plans and stability reports, especially if the site is in a dolomitic area.
• Attending project inception meetings and providing detailed work plans and risk assessments.

Technical Requirements

The technical requirements for the tender include:

• Provision of qualified professionals, including a Principal Geotechnical Engineer registered with ECSA or SACNASP with over 3 years of experience, and a registered surveyor with at least 3 years of topographical survey experience.
• Carrying out field investigations comprising excavation of a minimum of 4 inspection pits per site, sampling, logging, and profiling according to recognized soil profiling standards.
• Performing laboratory tests such as grading, CBR, Atterberg limits, collapse potential, and concrete/brick testing.
• Producing detailed geotechnical reports that include site description, regional geology, groundwater conditions, stability assessments, and recommendations for foundation design and construction.
• Deliverables must include investigation reports, geotechnical zones plans, and stability assessments, especially in dolomitic zones.
• Adherence to project timelines, including attendance at inception meetings and submission of work plans and risk registers within five working days of appointment.
• Costing must be comprehensive, covering site investigations, laboratory testing, reporting, and disbursements, with no additional costs post-contract award.
