Objectives

The primary objective of this tender is to engage a qualified contractor to undertake the construction of the hardscape and preparatory building works, as well as to supply and install a custom-made precast concrete water feature. These works are part of the development of the new 200-year Commemorative Garden at the Iziko South African Museum, aiming to enhance the landscape and commemorate the museum's bicentennial.

Scope

The scope of work includes:

• Construction of exposed aggregate concrete slabs with specified thicknesses (100mm to 180mm), incorporating contour design elements as per detailed drawings.
• Supply and installation of precast concrete panels reinforced with galvanized steel mesh, including recessed water feature elements.
• Preparation of subbase with 150mm rip and re-compacted G5 material, ensuring compaction to specified standards (93-95% Modified AASHTO density).
• Application of waterproofing measures in accordance with project specifications.
• Adherence to all relevant regulations, standards, and specifications, including those from the National Building Regulations and SANS standards.
• Coordination with landscape architects and other consultants, ensuring proper handling of planting and tree root zones with care and appropriate methods.

Technical Requirements

The technical requirements specify:

• Use of high-quality materials compliant with SANS specifications and international codes where applicable.
• Construction of concrete slabs with maximum thickness of 180mm and minimum of 100mm, featuring contour design elements as per detailed drawings.
• Reinforcement with galvanized steel mesh (#395) and galvanised steel reinforcement of ISAM200 grade, with proper coverage and bent into shape as per design.
• Preparation of a 150mm compacted G5 subbase, compacted to 93-95% Modified AASHTO standards, under all floors.
• Implementation of waterproofing measures in line with project specifications.
• All work to be executed in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993, and relevant regulations.
• Work to be carried out by competent personnel qualified for each specific trade.

Skills Requirements

The contractor must demonstrate:

• Proven experience in constructing exposed aggregate concrete slabs and precast concrete features.
• Capability to handle reinforced concrete work with galvanized steel reinforcement and mesh.
• Expertise in preparing and compacting subbases to specified standards.
• Knowledge of waterproofing application techniques suitable for landscape and water feature installations.
• Ability to coordinate with landscape architects and other project consultants, especially regarding planting and tree root zone work.
• Compliance with health and safety regulations and standards throughout the project duration.
• Qualified personnel with relevant trade certifications and experience in similar projects.
