Objectives

The primary objectives of this tender are to supply and deliver soil rehabilitation materials, provide training, control Prosopis (mesquite) trees, and implement soil rehabilitation and veld (grassland) enhancement works at the Strydenburg and Hopetown commonages. The project aims to restore degraded land, control invasive Prosopis trees, improve veld condition, and promote sustainable land management practices.

Scope

The scope of work includes:

• Supply and delivery of soil rehabilitation materials to designated sites.
• Provision of comprehensive training programs for local farmers and stakeholders on veld management, erosion control, and invasive species removal.
• Mechanical and chemical control of Prosopis trees using specified herbicide mixtures and physical removal methods.
• Implementation of soil and veld enhancement works, including reseeding, erosion control structures (silt fences, gabions, rock berms, AquaRockBags®), and bioengineering soil erosion remediation techniques.
• Control of Prosopis through chemical and mechanical means, including foliar herbicide application and tree removal.
• Veld reinforcement through reseeding with approved grass species using no-till methodology.
• Construction and installation of erosion control structures such as silt fences, gabions, rock berms, and AquaRockBags®.
• Monitoring, maintenance, and reporting on the progress of rehabilitation works over the project duration.

Technical Requirements

The technical requirements specify:

• Use of approved herbicide mixtures for Prosopis control, with detailed application procedures.
• Application of veld enhancement techniques including seed procurement, storage, and no-till seeding machinery capable of applying seed, fertilizer, and ameliorants.
• Implementation of bioengineering soil erosion remediation methods such as silt fences, gabions, rock berms, and AquaRockBags® with detailed installation procedures.
• Use of certified, fresh, and germination-tested grass seeds and plant material, with proper storage and handling.
• Provision of a detailed veld enhancement methodology, including grass species composition and equipment list.
• Adherence to environmental management practices, safety standards, and project-specific environmental protocols.
• Training of beneficiaries on erosion control, invasive species removal, and sustainable grazing practices.

Skills Requirements

The tenderer must demonstrate:

• Extensive experience in soil erosion remediation and land rehabilitation projects, with a minimum of five (5) completed projects valued at least R5 million.
• Proven expertise in the control of Prosopis using chemical and mechanical methods.
• Capability to procure, handle, and apply certified grass seeds and plant materials according to legal and quality standards.
• Technical proficiency in bioengineering techniques such as installing silt fences, gabions, rock berms, AquaRockBags®, and Vetiver grass planting.
• Ability to develop and implement comprehensive veld and soil rehabilitation methodologies.
• Qualified personnel for conducting training sessions and providing technical support to local farmers and stakeholders.
• Capacity to manage project logistics, including sourcing equipment, materials, and manpower, ensuring compliance with occupational health and safety regulations.
