Objectives

The primary objective of the project is to refurbish the Glebe Dam Pumpstation to restore and improve its capacity to pump water to the Akkerkloof Dam. This includes replacing and upgrading pumps, motors, control systems, and associated infrastructure to ensure reliable operation, safety, and compliance with relevant standards. The project aims to optimize water transfer, prevent vandalism, and ensure the station operates efficiently and safely within the specified period.

Scope

The scope of work encompasses:

• Design, supply, delivery, installation, testing, and commissioning of new pumps, motors, and control equipment.
• Refurbishment of existing pipework, including removal of sections, installation of inline strainers, and connection modifications.
• Installation of safety features such as strainers, guards, and emergency stop stations.
• Civil works related to civil structures, foundations, and site access.
• Provision of security, site facilities, and environmental management during construction.
• Ensuring compliance with safety, environmental, and operational standards.

Technical Requirements

The technical specifications include:

• Refurbishment of the pumpstation to achieve a duty point of 70 m³/s at 84 m head.
• Replacement of two submersible pumps with specified capacity and performance.
• Replacement of soft starters, bearings, seals, and electronic water meters.
• Installation of covers over couplings and telemetry system upgrades.
• Design and installation must comply with FIDIC 1999 First Edition conditions.
• Use of corrosion-resistant materials and standard specifications for pipelines and equipment.
• Provision of safety features, including guards, emergency stops, and strainers.
• Mechanical and electrical standard specifications, including control systems, instrumentation, and SCADA integration where applicable.
• Ground conditions and site access considerations for civil and mechanical works.

Skills Requirements

The project requires contractors and personnel with the following skills and qualifications:

• Proven experience in refurbishing water pumpstations, with a minimum of 15 years relevant experience for key personnel.
• Qualified pump technicians with 10+ years of experience in mechanical and electrical pump systems.
• Health and Safety Officers with 5-9 years of relevant experience, capable of implementing safety protocols and conducting site inspections.
• Ability to provide CVs and proof of qualifications for project managers, mechanical and electrical engineers, and safety personnel.
• Competence in mechanical design, installation, testing, and commissioning of water pumping equipment.
• Experience in corrosion protection, pipeline installation, and civil works related to pumpstations.
• Skills in project planning, scheduling, and environmental management.
• Knowledge of South African standards, environmental regulations, and safety legislation.
