Objectives

The primary objective of this tender is to supply, deliver, install, and provide training on a brand new solvent extractor/fat analyzer for analytical services within the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture & Rural Development. The system aims to facilitate accurate and efficient determination of crude fat in animal feed samples, reducing turnaround times, minimizing manual labor, enhancing safety, and promoting solvent recovery and recycling.

Scope

The scope includes:

• Provision of a complete automated solvent extractor/fat analyzer system suitable for crude fat analysis in animal feeds.
• Installation and commissioning of the equipment at Cedara, KwaZulu-Natal.
• Comprehensive user training for departmental staff.
• Provision of maintenance and repair services, including a guarantee/warranty period of at least 1 year.
• Support for method validation across various feed types and samples.

Technical Requirements

The technical specifications for the solvent extractor/fat analyzer include:

• Instrument Name/Model: Complete system with all accessories for full operation, suitable for crude fat determination in animal feeds.
• Analytical Principle: Based on Soxhlet extraction or include Soxhlet as a validated technique.
• Automation & Controls: Fully automated, capable of unattended operation with user-friendly digital controls.
• Features: Automated cooling, solvent handling, and safety features such as built-in fire protection and closed system design.
• Dimensions & Power: Approximate size 70 cm (W) × 50 cm (D) × 80 cm (H), weight around 50 kg, operating at 110-240V, 50/60Hz.
• Performance: Minimum sample size of 1 g, fat determination range 0.1–100%, extraction time 30–60 minutes for 10+ samples, throughput ≥50 samples/day, solvent volume per run ~500 mL, solvent type Petroleum Ether, recovery >90%, compatible with AOAC, ISO, and Agrilasa methods.
• Safety: Built-in fire protection, system must be closed to fumes exposure.
• Installation & Training: Full installation, comprehensive user training, and support for method validation.

The successful bidder must demonstrate:

• Technical expertise in the supply, installation, and commissioning of automated solvent extraction systems.
• Availability of qualified service engineers with the capacity to provide ongoing maintenance and repairs.
• Experience in supporting laboratory analytical equipment, including method validation and calibration.
• Ability to provide comprehensive user training and technical support post-installation.
• Proven track record in delivering similar laboratory equipment, preferably with references or past project documentation.
• Compliance with safety standards and ability to meet the technical specifications outlined.
