Objectives

The primary objective of this tender is to appoint a service provider to undertake comprehensive reconstruction works on the Lapa structure at the KwaZulu-Natal National Botanical Garden. The goal is to rehabilitate, upgrade, and ensure the long-term structural integrity and durability of the Lapa, including replacement and realignment of structural components and installation of a durable roofing system.

Scope

The scope of work includes:

• Reconstruction of the Lapa structure, involving removal of existing thatch material, ridge capping, binding wires, and associated fixings to expose the roof framework.
• Replacement of support poles with treated timber poles of suitable grade and dimensions, with reinforced concrete footings and a raised reinforced concrete floor/platform with proper drainage slope.
• Installation of wall plates, ridge beams, rafters, bracing, and purlins to form the new roof framework.
• Timber treatment and protection, cleaning of roofing sheets, and installation of roofing sheets with appropriate overlaps and fixing methods.
• Installation of ridge caps, finishing works including tiles, and ensuring overall structural stability and weatherproofing.

Technical Requirements

The technical requirements specify adherence to:

• Latest editions of relevant standards, including SANS 0400 and Occupational Health and Safety Act of 1995.
• Use of new, high-quality materials and equipment conforming to current specifications and codes.
• Execution of work in a first-class, workman-like manner by qualified tradesmen.
• Proper timber treatment for weather resistance and insect protection.
• Installation of roofing sheets with correct overlaps, secure fixing with rubber washers, and proper sealing.
• Compliance with municipal regulations, laws, and by-laws.
• Guarantees from manufacturers/suppliers for a minimum of 12 months for the completed work.

Skills Requirements

The tenderer must demonstrate:

• Experience in similar structural reconstruction projects, supported by reference letters and project lists (minimum of four references in the last five years).
• Capability to supply and install timber structures, roofing systems, and concrete foundations, with appropriate technical expertise.
• Qualified personnel with relevant construction or built environment qualifications, including CVs indicating experience and certifications.
• Operational capacity to execute the project within the specified timeframe, including availability of plant and equipment.
• Knowledge of health and safety regulations, with a comprehensive Health and Safety Plan addressing site risks, emergency procedures, and compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
