Objectives

The primary objective of this tender is to appoint a qualified service provider to perform comprehensive service and maintenance of standby diesel generators across the University of Johannesburg campuses. The goal is to ensure optimal generator performance, reliability, and compliance with safety and environmental standards over a three-year period, including scheduled preventive maintenance and emergency response services.

Scope

The scope encompasses the scheduled quarterly maintenance of 84 standby diesel generators ranging from 50KVA to 1000KVA, including minor and major services, as well as emergency corrective maintenance. The major services involve activities such as cooling, fuel, engine, battery, control panel, and alternator systems, with consumables included. The contract also covers emergency breakdown responses, reporting, and potential rental generator provisions. The scope may be adjusted at UJ’s discretion, and multiple service providers may be appointed.

Technical Requirements

• Maintenance of 84 generators on a quarterly basis, with three minor services and one major service annually per generator.
• Major service activities include inspection and servicing of cooling systems, fuel systems, engine and lubrication, batteries, control panels, and alternators, with appropriate consumables.
• Provision of detailed job cards, reports, and recommendations for corrective actions, with separate quoting for parts and repairs.
• Emergency response services for unplanned breakdowns, with a focus on minimal downtime and quick repairs.
• Adherence to safety, health, and environmental regulations, including compliance with relevant legislation and standards.
• Use of qualified, trained personnel with appropriate trade certificates and experience.
• Provision of rental generators if required, with sourcing, installation, and management included.
• Implementation of quality assurance, reporting, and documentation procedures.

Skills and Skills Requirements

• Technical expertise in diesel generator maintenance, including cooling, fuel, engine, electrical, and control systems.
• Qualified personnel with trade test certificates (e.g., Diesel Mechanics, Electricians, Millwrights).
• Experience in managing large-scale generator maintenance projects, preferably with references of similar scope and size.
• Knowledge of safety, health, and environmental legislation relevant to generator servicing.
• Proficiency in reporting, documentation, and corrective maintenance procedures.
• Ability to respond promptly to breakdowns and emergency calls, with effective troubleshooting skills.
• Familiarity with procurement processes, rental equipment sourcing, and supplier management.
