Objectives

The primary objective of this tender is to appoint a service provider capable of delivering scientific editing support to ensure the correctness, quality, and adherence to standards of SANBI's scientific research content. The provider will support the editing, proofreading, and development of scientific manuscripts, research materials, and electronic media, thereby enhancing the quality and accuracy of SANBI’s publications and media outputs.

Scope

The scope of work includes:

• Providing specialised scientific and technical editing services for SANBI’s scientific publications, including manuscripts, research articles, and reports.
• Supporting the development of scientific writing and editing skills among SANBI staff.
• Participating in production team meetings and coordinating with graphic designers, authors, reviewers, and stakeholders.
• Ensuring content aligns with SANBI house style, UK English standards, and international publishing norms.
• Reviewing and editing a variety of scientific products such as manuscripts, shorter revisions, and research materials.
• Supporting ad hoc editing requests for print and electronic media on short notice.
• Assisting in finalising manuscripts for design, layout, and printing, including proofreading and liaising with graphic designers and printers.
• Supporting the development of scientific editing skills within SANBI’s research staff.

Technical Requirements

• Proven experience in scientific and technical editing, particularly in botanical and zoological sciences.
• Degree or qualification related to taxonomy, biodiversity, or relevant scientific fields.
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience in scientific editing and publishing support.
• Knowledge of international scientific standards, botanical and zoological nomenclature, and relevant databases (e.g., POSA, BGIS, Biodiversity Advisor).
• Ability to work with various subjects including taxonomy, ecology, genetics, conservation, and biodiversity monitoring.
• Competence in editing scientific manuscripts, checking figures, references, and ensuring consistency with style guidelines.
• Familiarity with layout and design packages, and basic understanding of publishing processes.
• Ability to build and maintain a database of scientific content reviewers.
• Availability during office hours with reliable internet access for remote work.

Skills Requirements

• Specialised scientific editing skills with a focus on accuracy, clarity, and adherence to international standards.
• Excellent command of UK English grammar and spelling.
• Strong communication and coordination skills to liaise with authors, reviewers, graphic designers, and SANBI staff.
• Knowledge of SANBI’s scientific publications, style guides, and house style.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a dynamic publishing environment.
• Experience in supporting capacity building for scientific staff in editing and writing skills.
• Proficiency in referencing, citation styles, and ensuring references adhere to CrossRef and journal standards.
• Demonstrated ability to provide high-quality editing support for peer-reviewed journals and scientific media.
