Objectives

The primary objective of this tender is to reinstate the Cathodic Protection (CP) system at Cosmo City, ensuring the protection and integrity of water pipelines through supply, installation, and commissioning of CP materials and equipment. The project aims to meet specified technical standards, ensure safety compliance, and deliver durable, high-quality solutions that support Johannesburg Water’s infrastructure maintenance.

Scope

The scope includes:

• Site assessment and briefing at Cosmo City CP unit.
• Excavation, reinstatement, and civil works for groundbed trenches and cable routes.
• Supply and installation of anode canisters, spacer canisters, epoxy-filled splicing kits, and insulated cables.
• Installation of monitoring enclosures, reference electrodes, coupons, and associated cabling.
• Electrical tie-ins, coating repairs, and testing as per specifications.
• Preparation of documentation, quality control, and safety compliance.

Technical Requirements

The technical scope mandates adherence to:

• Design and installation of impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) systems in accordance with SANS 15589 standards.
• Use of specified materials such as titanium anodes, calcined pitch coke, and double insulated cables rated up to 600/1000V.
• Installation of monitoring enclosures with IP68 rating, concrete encasement, and corrosion-resistant components.
• Installation of reference electrodes and coupons with specified backfill and cabling, ensuring long-term stability and compliance with ASTM standards.
• Execution of excavation, backfilling, and reinstatement in accordance with safety and environmental regulations.
• Quality assurance through testing, documentation, and factory inspections.

Skills and Skills Requirements

The project requires personnel with:

• Qualified civil and electrical engineers with experience in cathodic protection systems.
• Technicians trained and certified by manufacturers for installation, coating repair, and testing of CP components.
• Qualified electricians registered with the Electrical Contracting Board of South Africa for electrical tie-ins.
• Skilled civil workers for excavation, backfilling, and civil reinstatement, supervised by competent civil professionals.
• Quality control inspectors with experience in testing and verifying materials and installation compliance.
• Safety officers familiar with OHS regulations, responsible for site safety, risk assessments, and safety documentation.

All personnel must demonstrate competence, proper training, and adherence to safety standards throughout the project duration.
