Objectives

The primary objectives of the tender are to:

• Change the hollow shaft configuration on conveyor belt drives at Matimba Power Station.
• Remove existing pulley shafts and replace them with new solid shaft couplings, stub shafts, and pulley shafts.
• Design and install new torque arms to accommodate the new configuration.
• Commission the modified system across all twenty-four conveyor belts.
• Ensure the modified system improves power transmission efficiency and operational reliability.

Scope of Work

The scope encompasses the following key activities:

Part 3: Scope of Work

• Description of the Works: Engineering change involving removal of current pulley shafts, manufacturing, supply, and installation of new components, including designing and installing torque arms, and commissioning on all conveyor belts.
• Employer’s Objectives and Purpose: To enhance the speed coupling locking mechanism for tightening and loosening, and to improve power transmission reliability.
• Design and Engineering: The contractor shall perform all basic and detailed design activities, provide suitable designs, and supply all drawings and modifications necessary for the new system.
• Procurement and Construction: Procurement of components, manufacturing, installation, and testing of the new system, ensuring compliance with safety and technical standards.
• Commissioning and Testing: Cold and hot commissioning, including performance tests, defect rectification, and as-built documentation.
• Documentation: Submission of design, manufacturing, installation, and operational manuals, along with as-built drawings and documentation.

Technical Requirements

The technical requirements include:

• Design and engineering of a new configuration that eliminates hollow shafts as primary low-speed couplings, involving machining stub shafts and designing pulley shafts with specified dimensions.
• Use of specified components such as BMG RC TYPE 10 or 20 B/A solid flange couplings and shrink disc couplings with designated sizes.
• Compliance with ISO9001 quality standards, IEC 61355 classification, and Eskom’s technical documentation standards.
• Design freeze at basic and detailed design stages, with active cooperation with the Employer.
• Adherence to safety, health, and environmental regulations, including risk assessments, fire protection, and hazardous waste handling.
• Provision of detailed manufacturing, installation, and commissioning plans, including inspection and testing procedures.
• Ensure system performance meets specified torque and load requirements for each conveyor type.

Skills and Skills Requirements

The tender requires the following skills and expertise from the contractor:

• Mechanical Engineering: Proven experience in conveyor drive systems, shaft design, and mechanical modifications.
• Design and Engineering: Ability to develop detailed mechanical designs, produce accurate drawings, and perform system integration.
• Manufacturing and Fabrication: Capability to manufacture shafts, couplings, and torque arms according to specified dimensions and standards.
• Project Management: Skills in planning, scheduling, and coordinating design, procurement, installation, and commissioning activities.
• Quality Assurance: Knowledge of ISO9001 standards, quality control procedures, and documentation management.
• Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance: Experience in managing safety risks, conducting risk assessments, and adhering to safety regulations.
• Testing and Commissioning: Expertise in system testing, performance validation, and troubleshooting.
• Documentation and Reporting: Ability to prepare comprehensive technical reports, as-built documentation, and manuals.
