Objectives

The primary objective of this tender is to obtain quotations for the manual preparation of thinnings, specifically for a forwarder handling a volume of 3,000m³. The work involves felling, debranching, log scaling, crosscutting marked trees into various products, and stacking processed logs according to client and diameter specifications, in line with SAFCOL’s standards and best practices.

Scope

The scope of work includes:

• Felling, debranching, log scaling, and crosscutting of marked trees into specified products.
• Stacking processed logs within designated areas next to extraction routes, separated by client and diameter class if necessary.
• Execution of operations in the specified geographical areas, with volumes not guaranteed and subject to operational demands.
• Adherence to safety, environmental, and industry standards during operations.

Technical Requirements

The technical requirements encompass:

• Execution of work according to industry norms and guidelines, including Forest Engineering of South Africa (FESA) standards.
• Compliance with safety legislation such as the Safety Act and Basic Conditions of Employment Act.
• Provision of trained personnel, including facilitators registered with SAQA, a competent supervisor on site, and trained first aiders (Level 2).
• Use of appropriate ancillary equipment (e.g., chainsaws with protective gear, fire beaters, rake hoes).
• Availability of suitable vehicles with current Certificates of Fitness, licenses, and compliance with traffic legislation, including safety features like enclosed canopies and rollover protection.
• Implementation of safety, health, environmental, and quality standards, including trained safety officers and SHE representatives.
• Legal compliance, including public liability insurance with extensions relevant to forestry operations.
• Pricing based on a R/m³ rate, inclusive of VAT, covering all costs associated with manual thinning preparation.

Skills Requirements

The skills and personnel requirements include:

• Experienced chainsaw operators equipped with protective clothing compliant with EN 381-5 standards.
• Personnel trained and registered with SAQA for relevant operational roles.
• Supervisors with proven competence in forestry operations.
• First aiders (Level 2) and SHE representatives with current valid certificates.
• Qualified safety officers or consultants to oversee safety compliance.
• Drivers with valid PrDP licenses and vehicles in roadworthy condition.
