Objectives

The primary objective of this tender is to secure a five-year (60-month) contract for the timely removal and disposal of biological waste generated by the microbiology laboratory. The aim is to maintain a safe, compliant, and environmentally responsible working environment by ensuring prompt waste management, thereby preventing environmental contamination and minimizing risks to personnel and the surrounding community.

Scope

The scope includes:

• Removal, containment, and safe disposal of various biological wastes such as agar plates, sludges, Moore pads, Quanti-Trays, Colilert vessels, microscope slides, Pasteur pipettes, and Envirocheck capsules.
• Waste collection at two laboratory sites: Pietermaritzburg (every Tuesday and Friday) and Richards Bay (once weekly, specific day to be arranged).
• Provision of all necessary containers, liners, and accessories, including 240L wheelie bins, bin bags, cable ties, sharps containers, fibreboard boxes, and biohazard tape.
• Use of compliant vehicles and personnel, adhering to relevant legislation, safety standards, and environmental regulations.
• Coordination with laboratory technical supervisors for scheduling and emergency arrangements.
• Provision of documentation such as Dangerous Goods Declarations, Waste Manifests, and Certificates of Safe Disposal for each collection.
• Reporting and tracking of waste quantities throughout the contract period.

Technical Requirements

The technical requirements include:

• Vehicles used must be registered as dangerous goods vehicles with valid operator cards and display appropriate markings.
• Drivers must hold valid PrDP-D licenses and wear PPE during collections.
• All waste collection must be documented with signed Dangerous Goods Declarations and Waste Manifests.
• Provision of Certificates of Safe Disposal after each collection.
• Collection schedules must accommodate public holidays with proactive communication and alternative arrangements.
• Containers, liners, and accessories must meet specified sizes and safety standards.
• All waste handling activities must comply with the Waste Act 2008 and relevant safety legislation.

Skills Requirements

The skills and qualifications required for bidders include:

• Legally compliant vehicles and drivers with valid licenses and operator cards.
• Experience in handling and disposing of health care risk waste or similar biological waste.
• Ability to coordinate effectively with laboratory staff and manage schedules proactively.
• Knowledge of relevant legislation, safety standards, and environmental regulations.
• Capability to provide accurate documentation, reporting, and traceability of waste management activities.
• Commitment to safety, hygiene, and environmental best practices throughout the contract period.
