Objectives

The primary objective of this tender is to drill and commission two (2) solar-powered boreholes in KwaZulu-Natal, including the installation of solar pumping systems, water distribution infrastructure, and associated electrical and security systems. The project aims to establish sustainable water sources utilizing renewable energy, ensuring proper testing, certification, and compliance with relevant standards.

Scope

The scope of work encompasses:

• Site establishment and groundwater surveys
• Borehole drilling to a depth of 100 meters with casing and capping
• Construction of concrete collars around boreholes
• Water testing, including yield and chemical/microbial analysis
• Installation of water distribution systems, including tanks and piping
• Design and installation of solar PV systems with modules, controllers, and submersible pumps
• Electrical wiring, grounding, lightning protection, and electrical compliance
• Fencing and security around boreholes and solar systems
• Commissioning, documentation, and warranty provision

Technical Requirements

The technical specifications include:

Site and Borehole Survey

• Geohydrological surveys using advanced geophysical methods (PQWT, Proton Magnetometer)
• Survey report signed by a SACNASP-registered Natural Scientist
• Survey report to include instruments and methods used

Borehole Drilling and Construction

• Drilling to 100m depth, 165mm diameter, compliant with SANS 10299-2003
• Steel casing: 177mm x 3mm, welded during lowering
• Concrete collar with specified dimensions and mixture
• Installation of borehole cap and appropriate pump and piping

Water Testing

• 48-hour yield tests with step drawdown and recovery monitoring
• Chemical and microbial analysis per SANS 241:2015 at SANAS-accredited labs
• Issuance of borehole yield certificates

Water Distribution System

• JoJo tank, piping, and concrete foundation
• Piping: 32mm (or up to 50mm) class 16 pipes

Solar PV System

• Monocrystalline modules (1980W capacity), with specific brands approved
• MPPT solar pump controller with appropriate capacity
• Submersible pump with flow of 4m³/hour and head of 134m
• Level sensors, protection cabinets, grounding, and lightning protection
• Mounting structures, cables, and sundries compliant with IEC/SABS standards

Electrical and Safety

• Electrical work to be performed by registered electricians with valid certifications
• Provision of certificates of compliance and warranties
• Lightning protection and earthing systems in place

Fencing and Security

• Steel palisade fencing with pedestrian gates, posts, and locks
• Fencing length: 24m per site, total 48m for two sites
• Materials to meet IEC/ISO standards and certified accordingly

Commissioning and Documentation

• System testing, inspection, and certification as per applicable standards
• Provision of operation and maintenance manuals, warranties, and certificates

Skills Requirements

• Experience in borehole drilling and groundwater exploration, with proven project references
• Qualified geohydrologists or geophysical survey specialists registered with SACNASP
• Licensed electrical contractors and electricians with valid registration and certifications
• Qualified solar PV system installers familiar with IEC/SABS standards
• Certified water quality analysts for chemical and microbiological testing
• Qualified fencing and security system installers
• Project management skills to coordinate multidisciplinary activities and ensure compliance with standards and timelines
