Objectives

The primary objective of this tender is to appoint a qualified service provider responsible for the supply, assembly, installation, and commissioning of a Tilapia Recirculation Aquaculture System (RAS) at the Agricultural Research Council—Animal Production in Irene. The project aims to establish a fully functional aquaculture system to support research activities related to tilapia farming and aquaculture technology development.

Scope

The scope includes:

• Supply of all necessary equipment and components for the RAS system, including tanks, biofilters, pumps, UV sterilizers, aeration systems, and support structures.
• Assembly and installation of the aquaculture system within designated buildings at ARC-Irene.
• Commissioning of the entire system to ensure full operational functionality.
• Provision of a detailed maintenance service plan for three years (not included in the pricing).
• Adherence to detailed technical specifications outlined in Appendix A and related drawings.

Technical Requirements

The technical specifications include, but are not limited to:

• Construction and installation of a recirculating aquaculture system capable of producing 3 tons or more of tilapia.
• Use of specific tank configurations, biofilters, swirl separators, and sump systems as detailed in the attached drawings and specifications.
• Incorporation of UV sterilizers, heat pumps, aeration systems, and biofiltration units with specified capacities.
• Installation of piping, valves, and fittings to facilitate water flow, filtration, and waste management.
• Provision of backup power systems (UPS) to ensure system operation during power outages.
• Implementation of biosecurity measures, including fish escape prevention nets and secure tank covers.
• Compliance with environmental and legislative standards applicable to aquaculture systems in South Africa.

Skills Requirements

The successful bidder must demonstrate:

• Experience in designing, installing, and commissioning recirculating aquaculture systems, specifically for tilapia or similar species.
• Proven track record of completing aquaculture projects with similar scope and capacity, supported by reference letters and project documentation.
• Technical expertise in water treatment, biofiltration, and system automation.
• Capability to provide ongoing maintenance and technical support for three years post-installation.
• Qualified personnel with relevant experience in aquaculture engineering, system assembly, and system testing.
• Knowledge of South African legislation related to aquaculture, environmental compliance, and safety standards.
