Objectives

The primary objective of this tender is to select a qualified partner to develop and deploy Artificial Intelligence (AI) models for data analytics collaboration within Transnet Freight Rail (TFR). The goal is to enhance operational efficiency, reliability, predictive maintenance, failure prevention, and data-driven decision-making across the organization’s locomotive, rolling stock, and infrastructure systems. The collaboration aims to leverage advanced AI and machine learning expertise, primarily through partnerships with academic institutions or research organizations, to create analytical models or a digital platform that provides reliable, real-time insights from complex operational data.

Scope

The scope includes:

• Development of predictive and prescriptive AI models tailored to rail and transport sectors.
• Deployment of models that improve asset and fleet reliability, maintenance planning, and failure prevention.
• Integration of AI solutions with existing railway management systems and data formats.
• Provision of training, capacity building, and documentation for end-users.
• Provision of project management, cost models, and delivery plans based on previous similar projects.
• Collaboration with a Gauteng-based academic or research organization with research-oriented objectives.

Technical Requirements

The technical specifications include:

• Evidence of previous deployment of AI models in rail or similar transport sectors, including reference letters, project scope, and outcomes.
• Explanation of AI model architecture (e.g., machine learning, deep learning, time-series forecasting) and its suitability.
• Demonstration of model performance metrics such as accuracy and precision.
• Live demonstrations or visualizations showcasing insights, bottleneck identification, KPI visualization, and automation workflows.
• Integration capabilities with existing systems and data formats.
• Compliance with data privacy, cybersecurity, and relevant safety standards.
• Provision of training manuals, implementation plans, and evidence of training capacity.
• Clear project timelines with previous successful delivery evidence.

Skills Requirements

The bidder must demonstrate:

• Capability and experience of key personnel involved in AI model development, including CVs with relevant qualifications, professional registrations (e.g., ECSA, PMI), and project involvement.
• Expertise in AI/ML, data engineering, and domain-specific knowledge relevant to rail/transport sectors.
• Experience in deploying predictive and prescriptive analytics models, including references and project outcomes.
• Capacity to provide training, support, and capacity building for end-users and maintenance teams.
• Ability to integrate AI models with existing operational systems and data formats.
• Knowledge of data governance, IP rights, and compliance with POPIA and cybersecurity standards.
