Objectives

The primary objective of this tender is to engage a qualified and experienced publishing house to develop, publish, print, and distribute one magazine for Transnet over a period of three (3) years. The service provider should demonstrate the ability to produce a high-quality, visually compelling publication that meets both print and digital standards, and to manage the entire lifecycle from content conceptualization to distribution.

Scope

• Design, layout, editorial (including research, article writing, and editing), printing, and delivery of one magazine monthly.
• Produce twelve full-color, bound magazines (24 pages each, including covers) with a total of 20,000 copies per issue.
• Distribute hard copies across major urban centers and remote areas in South Africa, according to a distribution list and schedule provided by Transnet.
• Provide one electronic copy in PDF format and arrange digital access via an app or online platform.
• Cover major Transnet events with photography and content development, arranging coverage at own cost.
• Research, develop, and conceptualize content aligned with Transnet’s corporate messaging, including sourcing interviews and photographic material.
• Ensure cultural, language, and historical sensitivities are respected, working with external translation services if necessary.
• Obtain editorial approval from Transnet before publication and accommodate editing or rejection of articles as needed.

Technical Requirements

• Production of a 12-page, full-color, saddle-stitched magazine (280 x 210mm, glossy 90gsm text, 150gsm cover).
• Monthly production and delivery of 20,000 copies.
• Access to a national printing infrastructure for reliability and scale.
• Development of a mobile app or digital platform for electronic magazine access, including app development credentials and previous app samples.
• Provision of high-quality design, layout, and photographic content, including samples demonstrating understanding of Transnet’s brand.
• Arranging and covering photographic events, with images provided upon request.
• Use of own resources for content creation, interviews, and research, with minimal disruption to Transnet staff.
• Compliance with environmental policies, including waste disposal, recycling, and energy conservation.
• Security clearance for personnel involved in the project, if applicable.

Skills Requirements

• Experience in magazine publishing: Minimum 5-6 years in magazine content development, layout, and editorial services, with evidence through reference letters and samples.
• Design and layout expertise: Proven ability to produce engaging, high-quality visual publications that reflect Transnet’s branding, with samples of previous work.
• Content development team: Skilled editors, writers, and sub-editors with relevant experience, CVs, and seniority levels provided; team members can be freelancers with at least three years of collaboration.
• App development: Credentials and experience in developing magazine or content apps, with evidence of previous apps, CVs, and links.
• Awards and peer recognition: Attestation of excellence in design and creativity through industry awards or recognitions.
• Resource management: A dedicated team of resources, including content creators and designers, with relevant experience and qualifications.
• Environmental policies: Demonstrated commitment to environmental sustainability, including waste management and energy conservation policies.
