Objectives

The primary objective of this tender is to appoint a service provider to undertake research on the validation of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) as a reliable diagnostic tool for Sealed Self-Contained Self-Rescuers (SCSRs) in the mining environment. The research aims to evaluate ultrasonic NDT methods for assessing the integrity of sealed SCSRs, reducing reliance on destructive testing, and enhancing occupational health and safety in mining operations.

Scope

The scope of work includes:

• Investigating the application of ultrasonic NDT techniques, such as ultrasonic C-scan imaging and time-of-flight ultrasonic imaging, for evaluating the integrity of sealed SCSRs.
• Developing tailored NDT procedures aligned with international standards (e.g., ASTM E213-20, ISO 16810).
• Assessing the technical feasibility and effectiveness of ultrasonic NDT in detecting micro-leaks and internal defects in sealed SCSR enclosures.
• Conducting test programmes on sample SCSRs, analyzing data, and validating the diagnostic capability of ultrasonic NDT methods.
• Engaging with regulators and safety professionals to review findings and develop final guidance documents.
• Delivering comprehensive reports, including literature reviews, testing standards benchmarks, test results, and workshop outcomes.

Technical Requirements

The technical requirements encompass:

• Application of ultrasonic NDT methods suitable for sealed safety-critical devices in mining environments.
• Adherence to ASTM E213-20 and relevant international best practices for ultrasonic testing.
• Identification of optimal testing parameters such as frequency and probe type for SCSR testing.
• Development of a validated NDT procedure specific to sealed SCSR enclosures.
• Implementation of test programmes on sample units, data analysis, and effectiveness validation.
• Engagement with stakeholders for review and validation of findings.

Skills Requirements

The project team must possess the following skills and expertise:

• At least 5 years of experience in applied research related to ultrasonic Non-Destructive Testing (NDT).
• Expertise in NDT of safety-critical devices, specifically in testing sealed enclosures, with familiarity of international standards such as ISO 16810 and ASTM E213.
• Minimum of 10 years of experience in NDT technology, with proven capability in ultrasonic testing of sealed or safety-critical devices.
• Qualifications in NDT technology, mechanical engineering, materials science, metallurgy, physics, electrical engineering, or related fields.
• Experience in occupational hygiene within the mining sector, with at least one team member having 10 years of relevant sector experience and appropriate qualifications.
• Ability to develop and validate diagnostic procedures, analyze test data, and produce technical reports and guidance documents.
