Objectives

South African Airways aims to introduce contemporary, screen-free onboard kids’ packs to enhance family travel experiences on longer routes. The initiative seeks to fill a service gap, reinforce premium branding, and deliver quiet, low-mess, educational entertainment that fosters learning, curiosity, and cultural connection. The RFI functions as a market intelligence exercise to evaluate feasibility, gather indicative pricing, and inform future pilot programs and competitive procurement.

Scope

The project covers the end-to-end design, development, manufacturing, and supply of age-specific edutainment packs for children aged approximately 3–8 and 9–12 years. Respondents may propose customized, co-branded, licensed, off-the-shelf, or bundled models. Deliverables encompass concept research, content creation, industrial design, safety compliance, production, logistics, cabin implementation, crew training, and lifecycle management, including seasonal refreshes and sustainability strategies.

Technical Requirements

• Design & Usability: Packs must be strictly screen-free and battery-free in their base configuration. They must be tray-table compatible, quiet, low-mess, and feature minimal loose parts with secure retention mechanisms.
• Materials & Safety: All components must be non-toxic, low-odour, smudge-resistant, and hygienically sealed. Writing tools must be washable/non-toxic, and game elements must be tethered or self-contained. Outer packaging must be durable, age-coded, and predominantly reusable or recyclable.
• Compliance & Testing: Rigorous validation against international safety benchmarks (e.g., ISO 8124, EN 71, ASTM F963) is mandatory, covering chemical, mechanical, flammability, and small-parts hazards. Full component traceability, batch tracking, and documented recall procedures are required.
• Aviation Regulations: Strict adherence to dangerous goods regulations is essential. Any batteries, magnets, or electronic add-ons require prior written approval and specialist assessment.
• Commercial & Lifecycle: Pricing must be submitted in South African Rand across multiple volume tiers, clearly separating one-off development/tooling costs from recurring unit expenses. Shelf-life, storage limits, and heat/humidity performance must be declared.

Skills and Experience Requirements

• Proven expertise in child-development research, educational content authoring, industrial/product design, and toy manufacturing.
• Capability in regulatory compliance testing, intellectual property licensing, sustainable material sourcing, and global logistics/supply chain management.
• Experience delivering physical prototypes, conducting user testing, managing quality assurance protocols, and executing large-scale distribution and replenishment cycles.
• Consortia or subcontracting arrangements must clearly identify a lead accountable entity and define each participant’s role.
• Familiarity with aviation amenity supply chains and family-travel market dynamics is highly advantageous.
