Objectives

The primary objectives of this tender are to:

• Enhance air quality within the Palaeontology Lab by removing hazardous dust particles generated during fossil preparation.
• Improve working conditions for researchers and technicians.
• Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety standards.
• Protect fossil specimens from airborne contaminants.

The overall goal is to create a safer, cleaner, and more sustainable laboratory environment to support ongoing research and conservation efforts.

Scope

The scope of the project includes:

• Supply of Equipment: Dust extraction systems (including extraction hoods, ducting, filters, exhaust units), and fresh air supply systems with ventilation, air distribution, and filtration components.
• Installation: Mounting and securing of dust extraction units and fresh air systems, installation of ducting, air distribution, and extraction points in designated lab areas, and connection to existing electrical and mechanical infrastructure.
• Testing & Commissioning: Performance testing to ensure compliance with air quality standards, adjusting airflow and filtration, and providing operational training and maintenance guidelines.
• Compliance & Safety: Ensuring all installations meet occupational health and safety standards, implementing noise and vibration controls, and providing necessary documentation such as drawings and certificates.

Technical Requirements

The technical requirements include:

• Supply and installation of dust extraction systems with extraction hoods, ducting, filters, and exhaust units.
• Supply and installation of fresh air systems with appropriate ventilation, filtration, and air distribution components.
• Design systems to effectively remove dust particles during fossil preparation while maintaining a controlled environment.
• Conduct system performance tests to verify air quality and extraction efficiency.
• Ensure all work complies with provided specifications, drawings, and relevant standards.
• Provide operational training and maintenance documentation for museum staff.

Skills Requirements

The skills and qualifications required for the successful execution of this tender include:

• Company Experience: Proven track record in supplying, installing, and commissioning dust extraction and fresh air systems, especially in laboratories, museums, or similar environments.
• Key Personnel:
  • Project Manager: Professional Engineer registered with ECSA, with at least 3 years’ relevant experience in HVAC and extraction systems.
  • Electrician: Hold a valid electrical trade test & wireman’s license with a minimum of 3 years’ relevant experience.
  • Senior Supervisor (Refrigeration Mechanic/Gas Practitioner): Registered with SAQCC, with at least 3 years’ relevant experience.
  • Other Key Personnel: Qualified personnel with tertiary qualifications and at least 3 years’ relevant practical experience in HVAC and extraction systems.
• CVs and Qualifications: Detailed and current CVs of key personnel, including proof of qualifications and relevant experience.
• Electrical Skills: Qualified electrician with appropriate trade certification to commission electrical components.
• Methodology & Approach: Demonstrated understanding of HVAC principles, compliance with SANS standards, and a comprehensive project plan.
